"Because Every Life Deserves a Tomorrow"
Cancer is not a sudden disease; it is a gradual transformation of normal cells into abnormal, uncontrolled, and immortal cells.
Before reaching advanced stages, the body sends out warning signs (danger signals) that something is wrong at the cellular or tissue level.
Understanding these signals early can save lives because early detection means early cure.
If a person loses more than 5–10 kg within 6 months without dieting or exercise, it’s a strong warning sign.
Cancer cells grow very rapidly and consume a lot of body energy (glucose, proteins, fats). The body enters a condition called cancer cachexia, where muscles and fat are broken down to feed tumor cells.
Inflammatory molecules like TNF-alpha, IL-6, and interferons accelerate metabolism and cause severe weakness.
Pancreatic cancer, stomach cancer, lung cancer, esophageal cancer.
Fatigue from cancer doesn’t improve with rest.
Reasons include:
It feels like the body is fighting a constant internal war, exhausting all energy reserves.
Leukemia, lymphoma, colon cancer, advanced solid tumors.
Tumor cells trigger the immune system to release cytokines (IL-1, IL-6, TNF), which reset body temperature in the hypothalamus.
This causes a low-grade or intermittent fever that persists for weeks or months. In leukemia and lymphoma, fever may also be due to reduced immunity and infections.
Leukemia, lymphoma, kidney cancer.
When abnormal cells multiply locally, they form a tumor mass (lump). Cancerous lumps are painless, hard, irregular, and fixed to underlying tissues.
These cells invade surrounding areas and spread through lymphatic or blood vessels. Swollen lymph nodes (neck, armpit, groin) may mean metastasis (spread).
Breast, thyroid, oral cavity, testicular cancers.
Lung cancer irritates the bronchial walls, leading to chronic cough. Hoarseness occurs when a tumor presses on the recurrent laryngeal nerve.
Blood-stained sputum (hemoptysis) is a dangerous sign showing airway damage. Smokers should never ignore a cough lasting longer than 3 weeks.
Lung, throat, and laryngeal cancers.
Colon or rectal tumors block or ulcerate intestinal walls → irregular bowel movements, constipation, or diarrhea.
Blood or mucus in stool indicates bleeding from the intestinal lining. Bladder cancer causes blood in urine (hematuria), frequent urination, or burning sensation.
Colon, rectal, bladder, and prostate cancers.
Normal wounds heal by regeneration of cells. In cancer, the healing mechanism is disturbed because of uncontrolled abnormal cell division.
Any ulcer or sore that doesn’t heal in 2–3 weeks could be cancerous. Oral ulcers that bleed or enlarge (especially in tobacco users) are a key warning. Skin ulcers that grow or bleed easily may indicate skin carcinoma.
Oral cancer, skin cancer, cervical cancer.
Cancerous tissues are fragile and filled with abnormal blood vessels. Even small injuries cause bleeding.
Warning examples:
These occur because the tumor invades and destroys normal tissues and vessels.
Cervical, uterine, lung, colon, and bladder cancers.
Esophageal (food pipe) cancer causes narrowing of the passage. Initially, swallowing solid food is painful; later even liquids are difficult.
Chronic indigestion, bloating, or heartburn may be early symptoms of stomach cancer. These are often ignored but extremely important warning signs.
Esophageal, stomach, and throat cancers.
Melanoma (dangerous skin cancer) starts in pigment cells (melanocytes).
Early signs: changes in size, shape, or color of moles, or bleeding from them. Yellow skin (jaundice) can indicate liver involvement (metastasis).
Skin thickening, scaling, or chronic itching may also point to malignancy.
Melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, liver cancer (secondary).
Pain occurs when tumors press on nerves, bones, or organs. Cancer releases inflammatory mediators like prostaglandins and bradykinins, causing constant deep pain.
Example: Back pain → spine metastasis; Pelvic pain → ovarian or prostate cancer.
Brain or metastatic tumors increase intracranial pressure (ICP).
Symptoms include:
These are advanced warning signs of brain involvement.
| Warning Signal | Biological Mechanism | Common Cancer Types |
|---|---|---|
| Unexplained weight loss | Tumor metabolism, cytokines | Pancreas, stomach, lung |
| Persistent fatigue | Anemia, cytokine effect | Blood, colon |
| Fever | Immune hyperactivation | Lymphoma, leukemia |
| Lump | Abnormal cell cluster | Breast, thyroid |
| Cough/Hoarseness | Nerve/airway irritation | Lung, throat |
| Bowel/Bladder change | Obstruction, bleeding | Colon, bladder |
| Non-healing sore | Failed tissue repair | Oral, skin |
| Bleeding | Fragile tumor vessels | Cervix, colon |
| Indigestion/swallowing | Narrowed passage | Stomach, esophagus |
| Skin changes | Mutation in melanocytes | Melanoma, liver |
| Pain | Nerve invasion | Bone, prostate |
| Neurological change | Brain pressure | Brain, metastasis |
Cancer never appears suddenly. It silently develops over months or years — but the body always sends early clues.
Any of the above symptoms persisting for more than 2–3 weeks must be checked by a doctor.
Early medical screening (blood tests, imaging, biopsy) can detect cancer in the curable stage.
